How to Play Rummy
Rummy is one of the most popular card games in the world. The goal is straightforward: form melds of cards — runs of consecutive cards in the same suit, or sets of the same rank — and be the first to play all your cards. Easy to learn, endlessly strategic.
Meld types
Run (Sequence)
3 or more consecutive cards of the same suit. Example: 4♠ 5♠ 6♠ 7♠
Set (Group)
3 or 4 cards of the same rank in different suits. Example: 7♥ 7♦ 7♣
Complete rules
Setup
Use 1 standard deck (52 cards). Deal 7 cards to each player (2–4 players) or 6 cards (5–6 players). The remaining cards form the stock face-down; flip the top card to start the discard pile.
Your turn
Draw one card from the stock OR take the top card from the discard pile. Then meld face-up on the table if you can, and end your turn by discarding one card.
Melding & laying off
Place valid sets or runs face-up on the table. You can also lay off cards onto existing melds on the table — including those of other players — as long as they extend the meld validly.
Going out
When you can meld all your remaining cards (with or without a final discard, depending on the variant), you go out and win the round.
Calling Rummy
If a player discards a card that could be laid off onto an existing meld, any other player can immediately call "Rummy!" and play that card. The one who calls Rummy gains the advantage.
Scoring
The round winner scores the point total of all unmelded cards left in opponents' hands: face cards (J, Q, K) = 10 pts, Ace = 1 pt, others = face value. First to reach 100 points (or an agreed limit) wins.
4 strategies to win
Build runs over sets
Runs are easier to extend — a 3-card run can grow from either end. Sets cap at 4 cards. Focus on building runs early; convert to sets only when you have the right cards.
Discard high cards early
Face cards and Aces count 10+ points if caught in hand. Discard them early when they don't fit into a meld. Never hold a King or Queen just hoping for a set.
Watch the discard pile
What opponents pick up and discard reveals what they're building. Avoid discarding cards that clearly help them. If you see them consistently picking a suit, hold those cards.
Meld as soon as you can
Don't wait for the perfect hand — lay down melds as soon as they're valid. If an opponent goes out while you're still holding everything, you lose all the points in your hand.

How many cards do you deal in Rummy?
In standard Rummy: 7 cards per player for 2–4 players, 6 cards for 5–6 players. In Gin Rummy (the 2-player variant), each player gets 10 cards. In Rummy 500, players receive 7 cards (for 2 players) or 13 (for more).
What does "calling Rummy" mean?
If a player discards a card that could have been laid off onto an existing meld on the table, any other player can immediately shout "Rummy!" and play that card onto the meld. It's one of the most exciting moments in the game.
What is the difference between Rummy and Gin Rummy?
In basic Rummy, players meld cards onto the table throughout the game. In Gin Rummy (2 players, 10 cards each), no one lays down cards until someone "knocks" — ending the round. Gin Rummy also allows knocking with up to 10 points of unmatched cards (deadwood).
Can you pick up from the discard pile in Rummy?
Yes — on your turn you can take the top card from the discard pile instead of drawing from the stock. This is a key strategic move when that card completes or advances a meld you're building.
