How to Play Canasta

Canasta is a classic card game for 2โ€“6 players (best with 4 in two teams). The goal is to form melds of 7+ cards of the same rank โ€” called Canastas โ€” and accumulate enough points to win. It combines strategy, partnerships, and knowing when to take the discard pile.

Special cards

JokerWild โ€” most powerful. Substitutes any natural card in a meld.
2 (Two)Wild โ€” substitutes any natural card. Counts as the replaced card's rank.
Red 3 (โ™ฅ โ™ฆ)+100 bonus points each when melded. All four Red 3s = +800 pts.
Black 3 (โ™  โ™ฃ)Defensive: freezes the discard pile when discarded. No point value.

Complete rules

1

Setup

2 decks of 52 cards + 4 jokers = 108 cards. Deal 11 cards to each player. The rest is the stock pile; flip the top card to start the discard pile.

2

Your turn

Draw one card from the stock, OR take the entire discard pile if you can immediately meld the top card with 2 cards from your hand. Then meld cards if possible, and discard one card to end your turn.

3

Melding

Place groups of 3+ cards of the same rank face-up on the table. Wilds (2s and Jokers) can substitute for any rank, but no meld may have more wilds than natural cards.

4

Canasta

A meld of 7 or more cards of the same rank is a Canasta. You must complete at least one Canasta before you can go out.

5

Going out

Discard your last card (or meld all cards) to end the round. Your team must have at least one Canasta. Going out earns a +100 bonus.

6

Scoring

Sum the points from completed Canastas and melded cards, then subtract the value of cards left in hand. First team to 5,000 points wins the game.

Types of Canasta

+500 pts

Natural Canasta

7+ cards of the same rank with no wild cards. Marked with a red token.

+300 pts

Mixed Canasta

7+ cards of the same rank including one or more wild cards (2s or Jokers). Marked with a black token.

4 key strategies

Save your wild cards

Jokers and 2s are your most valuable assets. Resist using them early โ€” save them to complete a Natural Canasta or to take the discard pile at a critical moment.

Aim for Natural Canastas

Mixed Canastas are easier, but Natural Canastas score 500 pts vs 300 pts. Going for at least one Natural per round significantly boosts your score.

Control the discard pile

Taking the pile gives you a massive hand advantage. Use Black 3s to freeze it when your opponents are about to grab it. Avoid discarding cards that help them.

Coordinate with your partner

In 4-player team mode, watch what your partner melds. Add to their groups to complete Canastas faster, and signal priorities through what you choose to meld first.

Frequently asked questions

How many cards do you start with in Canasta?

In standard Canasta, each player is dealt 11 cards. Some variants deal 13. The remaining cards form the stock pile, and the top card is flipped to start the discard pile.

Can you take the discard pile in Canasta?

Yes โ€” you can take the entire discard pile instead of drawing from stock, but only if you can immediately meld the top card using 2 natural cards from your hand. If the pile is frozen (a wild card was discarded into it), you need a natural pair matching the top card to claim it.

What is the difference between a Natural and Mixed Canasta?

A Natural (Pure) Canasta has 7+ cards of the same rank with no wild cards, worth +500 points. A Mixed (Dirty) Canasta includes one or more wild cards and is worth +300 points. Natural Canastas are marked with a red token on top.

How do you win at Canasta?

The first team to reach 5,000 points across multiple rounds wins the game. In each round you score points from your Canastas and melds, minus the value of cards still in hand. Going out earns your team an extra +100 bonus.
