How to Play Monopoly

Monopoly is the world's best-selling board game. Buy and trade properties, build houses and hotels to charge rent, and drive opponents into bankruptcy. The last player standing with money and assets wins.

Setup

Each player starts with $1,500 in Monopoly money. Place all tokens on GO. Shuffle Chance and Community Chest cards separately. Select a banker to manage the bank's money and property deeds.

Taking a turn

Roll 2 dice and move that many spaces clockwise. Act on the space you land on: buy the property, pay rent, draw a card, pay a tax, or go to Jail. Rolling doubles lets you roll again.

Buying properties

If you land on an unowned property, buy it at the listed price or the bank auctions it to the highest bidder (all players can bid). Owning a property entitles you to rent when others land on it.

Collecting rent

When an opponent lands on your property, they pay you rent. Rent increases dramatically when you own all properties of a color group (a "monopoly") and when you add houses/hotels.

Building houses and hotels

Once you own all properties in a color group, buy houses from the bank. Houses must be built evenly across the group. 4 houses can be traded for 1 hotel, which maximizes rent.

Jail

Go to Jail if: you land on "Go to Jail," draw a card saying so, or roll 3 consecutive doubles. In Jail, you still collect rent. You can pay $50, use a Get Out of Jail Free card, or roll doubles on your turn (3 tries max).

Winning

The last player remaining who has not gone bankrupt wins. Bankruptcy occurs when you owe more than you own (including mortgaged properties) and cannot pay a debt.

4 key strategies

Buy orange and red

Orange (St. James, Tennessee, NY Ave) and Red (Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois) properties are landed on most often statistically — jail exits flow through them. Build here for maximum rent income.

Build 3 houses, not hotels

The jump from 3 to 4 houses gives less rent increase per dollar than 0→3. In a house shortage, keeping 3 houses denies others the houses to build. Often optimal.

Never leave cash idle

Monopoly rewards aggression. Buy everything you land on, then mortgage if needed. Unowned properties are wasted opportunities — opponents can buy them on auction.

Trade to complete sets

Trading is often the game's turning point. Be willing to give up something to complete a color set — the rent leverage from a monopoly far outweighs the traded property's individual value.

Frequently asked questions

Do you get $200 when you pass GO?

Yes — every time you pass or land on GO, collect $200 from the bank. This is one of the most misremembered rules: you collect it every time you pass, not just on your first lap. Landing directly on GO pays $200, not $400 — unless your group plays the house rule otherwise.

Does money go in the middle of the board for Free Parking?

No — that's a very popular house rule but NOT in the official rules. Officially, Free Parking is just a free resting space: nothing happens. The house rule (tax/fines go to the center; first person to land collects it) extends games significantly. Play whichever version your group prefers.

Can you build houses if you don't have a monopoly?

No — you can only build houses (and later hotels) on a property if you own ALL properties in that color group. Owning 2 out of 3 properties in a group means you collect only base rent — no building allowed.

What is the fastest way to win Monopoly?

Focus on orange/red/light blue properties (highest traffic), build to 3 houses quickly, and use auctions aggressively. Refuse fair trades and propose only trades that benefit you more. The fastest wins come from completing a monopoly early and building houses before opponents can react.
