The 4 betting rounds

Pre-Flop

Each player receives 2 private cards (hole cards). Small blind and big blind post forced bets. Action starts left of the big blind: call, raise, or fold.

Flop

3 community cards are dealt face-up. Betting starts left of the dealer button. Players build the best 5-card hand from their 2 hole cards + 5 community cards.

Turn

A 4th community card is dealt. Another betting round. With 4 cards showing, hand ranges narrow and bets tend to increase.

River

The 5th and final community card. Last betting round. If multiple players remain, all show their cards — best 5-card hand wins the pot.

4 beginner strategies

1

Play fewer hands

Beginners play too many hands. Fold weak starting hands preflop. Premium hands: AA, KK, QQ, AK, AQ. Starting tight wins more in the long run.

2

Position matters

Acting last (on the button or near it) is a massive advantage — you see what opponents do before deciding. Play more hands in late position.

3

Bet for a reason

Every bet should have a purpose: building the pot with a strong hand, or bluffing opponents with weak hands off the pot. Never bet "just to bet."

4

Read the board

Always ask: "What hands does this board favor?" A board of 7-8-9 should make you cautious with a top pair — straights are possible.

Frequently asked questions

How many players do you need to play poker?

Texas Hold'em works with 2–10 players per table. Standard home games are best with 4–8 players. With 2 players (heads-up), the small blind also acts first preflop. Board Game Battles supports multiplayer poker with friends or strangers in ranked matches.

What beats what in poker?

From highest to lowest: Royal Flush → Straight Flush → Four of a Kind → Full House → Flush → Straight → Three of a Kind → Two Pair → One Pair → High Card. When players tie, the higher-ranking individual cards (kickers) break the tie.

What is a blind in poker?

Blinds are forced bets posted before cards are dealt to create action. The player left of the dealer posts the small blind (half the minimum bet). The next player posts the big blind (full minimum bet). The big blind acts last preflop and first on subsequent streets.

Can you bluff in poker?

Yes — bluffing is a core skill. A bluff is a bet made with a weak hand to make opponents fold better hands. Successful bluffing depends on reading opponents, table image, and board texture. Beginners should bluff sparingly — most low-stakes players call too often.
