Autonomic nervous system

The autonomic nervous system (ANS) controls involuntary body functions — heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, digestion, temperature. It has two main branches with opposite functions: the sympathetic branch (activates the stress/alert response) and the parasympathetic branch (promotes rest, digestion, and recovery).

In anxiety, the sympathetic branch is chronically dominant — the body stays in a sustained state of alert. Activating the parasympathetic branch (through slow breathing, light exercise, positive social contact) is the mechanism behind many relaxation techniques — it literally 'switches off' the stress response.

The vagus nerve, the main component of the parasympathetic branch, connects the brain to internal organs and is a target of interventions such as vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) for treatment-resistant conditions. Breathing techniques that stimulate the vagus nerve (exhaling longer than inhaling) are essentially a way of 'hacking' the ANS.

When you inhale for 4 seconds and exhale for 6-8 seconds, you are actively activating the parasympathetic branch of the autonomic nervous system — which is why diaphragmatic breathing reduces anxiety within minutes.
