Sensory Sensitivity
Sensory sensitivity is when the nervous system processes stimuli — sound, light, touch, smell — with greater intensity than expected. It isn’t exaggeration or being "too sensitive": it’s a real difference in neurological processing, very common in autism (ASD) and ADHD, and present to varying degrees in many people.
Why does it happen?
In autism (ASD), neuroimaging studies show that the sensory cortex processes stimuli with greater amplitude — neutral sounds arrive with an intensity comparable to loud sounds in typical processing. It isn’t a matter of "low tolerance": it’s that the processing volume is set differently.
In ADHD, sensory hypersensitivity is less central but still very present — possibly related to the dopaminergic system’s drive for stimulation, which makes the brain more reactive to new stimuli in general. Anxiety also amplifies sensory sensitivity: in states of heightened alertness, the nervous system registers any input more intensely.
The 4 main dimensions
Noise (Hyperacusis)
Everyday sounds — a fan, overlapping conversations, keyboard clicks, public transit — arrive with much greater intensity than expected. Environments with multiple simultaneous sounds are especially taxing on the nervous system.
Strategies
Noise-canceling headphones, choosing quieter work environments, calming background sounds.
Light (Photophobia)
Fluorescent light can be processed as flickering or physically uncomfortable. Bright sunlight, glowing screens in dark rooms, and reflections are also frequent triggers.
Strategies
Indoor sunglasses, screen brightness control, warm-temperature lighting (3000K or lower).
Touch (Tactile)
Clothing tags, certain fabrics, an unexpected handshake, unsolicited hugs — can be genuinely distressing. Predictability of touch matters a lot: anticipated touch is generally better tolerated.
Strategies
Tagless clothing, soft and familiar fabrics, communicating physical-contact preferences to people close to you.
Smell (Hyperosmia)
A sense of smell much more intense than expected. Perfumes, cleaning products, food odors in enclosed spaces, air conditioning — can make environments inaccessible. Some smells work as regulators (wood, earth, certain foods).
Strategies
Fragrance-free products, ventilating spaces, identifying regulating smells and using them proactively.
Hypo- vs. hypersensitivity
Not every sensory difference is hypersensitivity. Some autistic people have hyposensitivity in certain dimensions — they need more input to register a stimulus. This can show up as seeking physical pressure (tight hugs, weighted blankets), a preference for loud sounds, or very intense flavors. A person’s profile can be hypersensitive in some dimensions and hyposensitive in others — one of the reasons individual mapping matters so much.
Sensory overload: when it hits the limit
When sensory input exceeds what the nervous system can process, overload can occur — showing up as a meltdown (an intense, hard-to-control emotional reaction) or a shutdown (shutting down, difficulty responding, withdrawal). Identifying triggers before reaching that point is one of the goals of sensory mapping.
How to map your sensory profile
Sensory mapping is the process of identifying, over time, which dimensions affect you most, under which conditions, and with what intensity. It’s more useful than a one-off assessment because sensitivity varies: days with more cognitive or emotional load raise sensitivity to stimuli that would be tolerable on other days.

No. For people with auditory hypersensitivity, headphones — especially noise-canceling ones — are sensory-regulation tools, not isolation tools. They’re equivalent to glasses: a necessary adaptation to the environment, not a social preference.
