Does Ritalin cause addiction?
At therapeutic doses for ADHD, Ritalin does not cause addiction. The addiction risk is widely exaggerated and does not apply to correct medical use.
Methylphenidate (Ritalin, Ritalin LA, Concerta) is a central nervous system stimulant, which naturally raises concerns about addiction. But the scientific evidence shows that, in therapeutic use for ADHD, the addiction risk is very low.
Why: addiction risk with stimulants is associated with high doses taken intravenously or intranasally, which produce a rapid dopamine spike — the mechanism behind the rewarding "high." At therapeutic oral doses for ADHD, the dopamine increase is gradual and moderate — enough to improve focus, but without the spike that drives addiction.
On top of that, longitudinal research shows that children and teens with ADHD who are treated with medication have a lower risk (not higher) of alcohol and drug dependence in adulthood compared to those left untreated — suggesting that untreated ADHD, with its impairments and impulsivity, is a bigger risk factor for addiction than the medication itself.
Stopping the medication can cause ADHD symptoms to return (because the medication treats but does not cure ADHD), not the significant withdrawal symptoms seen in true addiction.
