What’s the difference between acute and chronic stress?

Acute stress (minutes to hours) is adaptive — it prepares you for a challenge and resolves. Cortisol rises, you act, you resolve it, cortisol falls. Chronic stress (weeks to years) keeps the alarm system activated with no resolution — cortisol stays elevated, causing the damage described above. The problem isn’t stress itself, but the absence of recovery.

Can chronic stress cause depression?

Yes — it’s one of the most robust risk factors. The mechanism involves hippocampal reduction, HPA axis dysregulation and systemic inflammation — all linked to depression. Chronic stress from bereavement, overwork, difficult relationships or precarious socioeconomic conditions significantly raises the risk of a depressive episode.

Is burnout the same thing as chronic stress?
