ADHD Time Blindness

What it looks like day to day

Losing track of time

An hour passes in what felt like ten minutes. This isn’t distraction in the usual sense — the internal sense of time passing is genuinely less reliable, so there’s no automatic "check-in" that flags time slipping by.

Misjudging how long things take

"This will take 20 minutes" turns into two hours, or the reverse — a genuinely quick task keeps getting pushed off because it feels bigger than it is. The estimate itself is the part that’s unreliable, not the effort put into the task.

Being late without meaning to

Getting ready "in 5 minutes" and taking 40 isn’t about disrespect for other people’s time — it’s that the 5-minute estimate felt accurate in the moment, and there was no internal signal correcting it along the way.

Hard transitions

Switching from one activity to the next — especially stopping something absorbing to start something else — takes noticeably more activation than it seems like it should. The gap between "I should stop now" and actually stopping can be much longer than intended.

Hyperfocus swallowing hours

The flip side of losing track of time: hours disappear inside an absorbing task, with no natural time-check ever interrupting it. It can feel like only a few minutes have passed since sitting down.

Why it happens

Time blindness is generally understood as part of the broader executive and self-regulation differences in ADHD, rather than a stand-alone problem. Barkley (1997) frames the ADHD brain’s difficulty managing time as one expression of a wider self-regulation deficit — alongside working memory and impulse control. A controlled study by Barkley, Murphy and Bush (2001) found that adults with ADHD reproduced timed intervals less accurately than adults without ADHD, with larger errors on longer durations — evidence that the difficulty is measurable, not just a subjective impression.

Strategies that help

Externalize time — don’t rely on your sense of it

A visible clock or countdown timer in the room does what internal time-tracking doesn’t: it makes the passage of time something you can see, not something you have to feel. The goal isn’t willpower — it’s giving the brain an external reference it can actually use.

Time-box instead of open-ending

"I’ll work on this for 25 minutes" is easier to start and stop than "I’ll work on this until it’s done." A defined block turns an abstract, unbounded task into something concrete with a visible edge.

Add buffer time on purpose

If a task usually takes twice as long as it feels like it should, plan for that gap deliberately — build the buffer in ahead of time instead of discovering it’s missing when you’re already late.

Set alarms for transitions, not just for the start

A reminder 10 minutes before you need to leave — separate from the alarm to start getting ready — gives you a checkpoint in the middle of the activity, not just at the two ends of it.

Make plans visual

A written or visual schedule for the day — blocks of time you can see at a glance — compensates for a sense of time that doesn’t update itself automatically. Seeing "3 things happen between now and 2pm" carries information that a vague mental sense of "later" doesn’t.

Plan the stopping point, not just the starting one

Because transitions are often harder than starting, deciding in advance what will signal "stop" (a timer, an alarm, a specific stopping task) removes one more moment where the decision has to be made in real time.

When it’s worth a professional evaluation

Occasional lateness or a bad sense of how long a chore takes is common for everyone. It’s worth talking to a clinician when the pattern is longstanding, shows up across many areas of life, and comes with other ADHD traits — not as a way to self-diagnose, but because an evaluation can clarify what’s actually going on and what support fits.
